Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has moved swiftly to discipline six senior police commanders following a violent incident at an entertainment venue in Nandi Hills that has triggered public anger.
The action follows the circulation of an eight-minute CCTV clip recorded on January 10, 2026, showing armed police officers storming a pool hall and roughing up several young men. In the footage, officers are seen ordering patrons to lie on the floor before some are struck with batons, as demands for identification escalate into violence after one individual attempts to leave.
After the video spread widely online, the Internal Affairs Unit launched investigations and submitted findings to the police leadership. Kanja has since approved administrative measures targeting commanders deemed responsible for oversight failures in the area.
Those affected include the Tinderet Sub-County Police Commander, the Officers Commanding Songoh and Nandi Hills police stations, as well as senior officers in charge of RDU, GSU and ASTU camps in Songoh. The National Police Service said the focus on local leadership is meant to reinforce command responsibility for all actions within their jurisdictions.
While specific penalties were not disclosed, such measures typically range from suspension and transfers to demotion or dismissal. Political leaders and members of the public have strongly condemned the assault, renewing calls for accountability and police reforms.
The NPS has expressed regret to the victims and reiterated its commitment to lawful, professional policing across the country.
