National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta of fueling internal wrangles within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), dismissing claims that President William Ruto is behind the party’s troubles.
While speaking in Lamu County on Thursday, February 12, the Minority leader appeared to respond to Siaya Governor James Orengo, who had alleged that Ruto was orchestrating divisions in ODM. Junet, however, insisted the turmoil followed the departure of the party’s long-time leader, Raila Odinga, and blamed Kenyatta for sponsoring dissent.
“The problem we have in ODM is not about the broad-based government or President William Ruto. The problem is former President #Uhuru Kenyatta. He is the one destroying our party,” #Junet said. He urged Kenyatta to focus on Jubilee Party affairs and “leave us alone.”
Same sentiments were shared by Oburu Odinga who claimed that Uhuru was behind the challenges facing his party and that it is a pattern continuation of what he(Uhuru) desired since Raila’s 2022 failed presidential bid.
“Uhuru should leave our party alone. He had powers to hand Raila victory in 2022 but instead he chose to do what he did. We all know what happened under his hands,” Oburu told NEC meeting.
ODM has faced deepening divisions since Odinga’s death in October 2025. Tensions escalated in February 2026, culminating in the ouster of Secretary General Edwin #Sifuna on February 11. The High Court later suspended the decision pending determination of a case.
The party remains split, with one faction backing Ruto’s reelection bid and another pushing for an independent presidential candidate in 2027. Junet’s remarks also come weeks after he was replaced as Azimio coalition Secretary General by Suba South MP Caroli Omondi.
