Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale was among prominent Luhya leaders who gathered at the home of the late businessman and politician Cyrus Jirongo to pay their last respects, as questions continue to swirl around the circumstances of his death.
Khalwale, a close ally and longtime friend of the late Jirongo, maintained his firm position that his “brother” was murdered and that justice must be pursued to its logical conclusion. Speaking during the burial ceremony, the outspoken senator carried a ritualistic torch, symbolizing a call for truth and accountability. His dramatic arrival briefly interrupted the proceedings, drawing attention from mourners and leaders in attendance.
In a brief statement during the event, Khalwale declared, “Received our brother Hon. Cyrus Jirongo at Lumakanda,” a remark that resonated deeply with mourners and reinforced his belief that the late politician deserved truth and justice beyond the official narrative.
The senator’s remarks reignited debate within the Luhya political establishment, where opinions remain sharply divided over Jirongo’s death. While a section of leaders insist the late politician was assassinated, others allied to the government maintain that he died following a road accident, as officially reported.
Adding a new twist to the unfolding narrative, former Vihiga County Senator George Khaniri on Sunday presented what he termed fresh findings into the matter. According to Khaniri, Jirongo was allegedly kidnapped from Karen by two individuals before being killed at a different location. He claimed that the perpetrators later staged a road accident to conceal the crime and mislead investigators.
The competing accounts have intensified calls for a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation into Jirongo’s death, with leaders insisting that only a credible probe will settle the matter and deliver justice.
