Uganda’s opposition leader Bobi Wine has released disturbing allegations and screenshots which he says implicate the country’s army chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in the torture and intimidation of his wife during the recent election period.
In a detailed statement shared online, Bobi Wine accused Muhoozi – who is also President Yoweri Museveni’s son – of personally ordering soldiers to raid his home as part of a wider crackdown on opposition figures. He alleged that during the operation, his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, was subjected to severe mistreatment as soldiers demanded access to her phone and information on his whereabouts.
According to Bobi Wine, armed officers forced his wife to remain seated at gunpoint while questioning her, assaulted her, and recorded the ordeal on their phones. He claimed that the situation escalated to the point where her health deteriorated, forcing the soldiers to leave only after she lost consciousness and was later rushed to hospital.
Bobi Wine further alleged that images from the raid were shared by #Muhoozi himself, suggesting the operation was closely monitored by senior military leadership. He described the incident as a deliberate attempt to terrorise his family and break their resolve.
Despite the ordeal, Bobi Wine praised his wife’s resilience, saying she confronted the soldiers with courage and refused to cooperate despite the intimidation. He thanked supporters locally and internationally for messages of solidarity as she recovers from the trauma.
The opposition leader also revealed that his home remains under military occupation, with access restricted even to close relatives attempting to deliver food and other basic necessities.
Bobi Wine said the events underscore what he described as systematic abuse of power by the Museveni family, but insisted that such actions would not silence the struggle for democratic change. “We remain firm in our belief that Uganda will one day be free,” he said.
