U.S. Senator Jim Risch, the powerful chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has rejected Ugandan General Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s public apology, branding it empty and inadequate while calling for tougher sanctions against Uganda.

In a statement released on Friday, January 30, Senator Risch said Muhoozi- who is the son of President Yoweri Museveni – had crossed a red line, arguing that deleting controversial social media posts and issuing an apology to the United States was insufficient to undo the damage caused.

Risch urged the administration of President Donald Trump to reassess Washington’s security relationship with Kampala, including the imposition of targeted sanctions and a comprehensive review of military cooperation with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
