Former Vice President and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka held a candid and engaging dinner with Kenyans in the diaspora on Thursday evening, discussing the challenges and opportunities facing Kenyans living abroad.

During the meeting, Musyoka acknowledged the growing role of the diaspora as a stabilising force for families and communities back home, particularly amid rising taxes, a shrinking job market, and a challenging economic climate. “Even as they build new lives abroad, many Kenyans continue to carry the growing weight of supporting families and communities back home. Their sacrifice keeps many homes standing,” he said.

The conversation also focused on the immense investment potential within the diaspora community. Musyoka emphasized the need for clear and predictable policies to protect investments and remove barriers that hinder enterprise, property, and innovation. “With the right frameworks, the diaspora can remain one of Kenya’s strongest engines for growth and transformation,” he said.

A key topic was the safety and protection of Kenyans working abroad, especially in the wake of incidents such as the Russia–Ukraine crisis. Musyoka expressed concern over revelations from a New York Times investigation last year, highlighting gaps in Kenya’s labour export programmes and the urgent need for accountability and worker safeguards.

He reaffirmed his party’s commitment to placing the dignity, safety, and economic empowerment of Kenyans at the centre of national policy. “Kenyans in the diaspora are not distant observers; they are an integral part of our nation’s present and future. Their voices matter. Their contribution matters. Their welfare matters,” he said.

The engagement was attended by Deputy Minority Leader Robert Mbui, Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, and Machakos County MCA Helen Ndeti. Musyoka concluded by urging coordinated efforts to build a Kenya that respects its citizens, protects their interests, and inspires confidence in national systems.
