Couples planning to formalise their relationships through civil marriage will now enjoy a calmer and more tailored experience following the establishment of a VVIP civil marriage lounge by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), just in time for Valentine’s Day.
In a statement released on Sunday, February 7, the OAG said the new facility was introduced as part of preparations for the busy Valentine’s season, when demand for civil marriage services typically rises.
According to the Office, the lounge is designed to elevate the overall experience for couples by offering a more private, dignified, and comfortable environment for the solemnisation of civil unions. The move is also aimed at improving efficiency and the quality of service delivery.
“The facility, established ahead of the Valentine’s season, seeks to provide a serene, welcoming, and respectful space for couples choosing to solemnise their unions through civil marriage,” the OAG noted.
The Attorney General’s office added that the successful launch of the VVIP lounge represents an important milestone in enhancing customer experience, while ensuring that couples are treated with the dignity befitting such a significant life event.
Civil marriages have steadily gained popularity across Kenya, including in rural areas, with many couples viewing them as a practical and affordable alternative to traditional or religious wedding ceremonies.
To qualify for a civil marriage, both parties are required to present key documents, including national identity cards or passports, birth certificates, passport-size photographs, and proof of marital status.
Prospective couples must first apply for a 21-day public notice of marriage through the eCitizen portal. Once the notice period lapses, the marriage must be solemnised within 90 days. After the notice period, couples are required to appear before the Registrar of Marriages for document verification, an interview, and the completion of a marriage affidavit.
For those seeking a quicker process, an option for a special marriage licence is available, allowing the ceremony to be conducted without observing the standard notice period.
Civil marriage ceremonies are typically held at the Registrar of Marriages’ offices, such as Sheria House, but can also take place in licensed venues including hotels, gardens, private residences, or offices of Deputy or Assistant County Commissioners.
The standard costs include approximately Ksh 600 for the notice fee, about Ksh 3,900 for the ceremony, and roughly Ksh 16,000 for a special licence. #ValentinesDay
