The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has cautioned Kenyans to remain vigilant when meeting individuals they have only interacted with online, citing a worrying increase in incidents linked to first-time encounters.

In a statement issued on Saturday, February 14, detectives revealed that several reported cases stem from initial meetings arranged through social media platforms and online dating applications. According to the agency, unsuspecting individuals have been lured into unsafe situations under the guise of friendship or romantic interest.

The warning was delivered in a Valentine’s-themed message aimed at reminding the public that while forming new relationships is natural and encouraged, personal security should never be overlooked.

“As Cupid’s arrows fly across digital skies, we gently remind you that online connections can spark beautiful beginnings, but they also conceal shadows,” the DCI stated.

Investigators noted that many victims are targeted after building trust through prolonged online conversations, only to face robbery, assault, or other forms of exploitation during physical meet-ups.

The DCI urged members of the public to exercise heightened caution when planning first-time meetings. Among the key safety measures highlighted were choosing well-lit, busy public venues and informing trusted friends or family members about the meeting details. Detectives further discouraged encounters in secluded or private settings, especially with individuals whose background remains unknown.

“The DCI extends to you and your cherished ones heartfelt wishes of pure joy, serene moments, and unbreakable bonds wrapped in warmth. Exercise utmost caution when meeting someone from dating apps or social platforms for the first time,” the statement added.
