Authorities in Russia have issued a formal response after online videos surfaced appearing to show a man described as Russian interacting with women in Kenya and Ghana, triggering widespread backlash.

The clips, which have circulated rapidly across social media platforms, prompted officials in both Nairobi and Accra to launch investigations into the matter. Public anger has continued to grow, with many demanding accountability and protection for the women involved.

In a statement released on Monday, February 16, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Ghana confirmed it was aware of media reports concerning the alleged conduct of a man believed to be a Russian national.

“The Embassy has taken note of publications in the Ghanaian media regarding the alleged involvement of a person described as a Russian citizen in unethical activities that were reportedly recorded and distributed without consent,” the statement read.

However, the diplomatic mission stopped short of verifying the individual’s nationality or confirming his identity.

The controversy centers on footage that allegedly shows a white foreign man striking up conversations with women in public spaces in Nairobi and Mombasa, including shopping centres, streets, and supermarkets. According to reports, he would exchange contacts and later invite the women to a short-term rental apartment. The recordings were reportedly shared online without the women’s knowledge or approval.

In Kenya, the government has described the incident as a serious violation of rights. Gender Cabinet Secretary Hanna Cheptumo termed the matter a grave infringement of constitutional protections, particularly those safeguarding privacy and human dignity.

Speaking to the press, Cheptumo directed security and investigative agencies to move swiftly and collaborate with international counterparts, citing the cross-border implications of the case.
