Several people sustained injuries after a passenger bus and a canter collided along Thika Road on Monday, February 23.

Initial reports suggest the crash occurred near Safari Park Hotel on the Nairobi-bound lane, causing heavy traffic along the busy highway.

Images and videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke show the bus lying on its side, while the canter appears to have struck a roadside guardrail. Early indications suggest the collision may have occurred as one vehicle attempted to overtake the other.

At the time of reporting, no fatalities had been confirmed, though the scene was chaotic due to the rainy weather and a large number of onlookers.

Witnesses told Kenyans.co.ke that both lanes were affected, creating gridlock on both the Nairobi-bound and Thika-bound directions.

“It was raining and slightly misty, so visibility was poor. Traffic piled up all the way to Githurai,” said one eyewitness.

Police officers and emergency responders were quickly deployed to the scene to manage traffic and assist in removing the vehicles from the highway.

The accident comes amid ongoing heavy rains in the region, which significantly increase the risk of road accidents due to slick roads and low visibility.

On Sunday, the Kenya Meteorological Department had warned that areas including Kiambu and Nairobi would experience very heavy rainfall within 24 hours. The notice highlighted Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Central Highlands, and South East Lowlands as regions expected to receive rainfall exceeding 50mm between 9 a.m. Sunday, February 22, and 9 a.m. Monday, February 23. Residents were urged to exercise caution and avoid crossing flooded roads or rivers.

This latest incident follows a similar accident along the highway last month, when a bus carrying teachers collided with a 33-seater matatu near City Primary School in Ngara on Saturday, January 31, 2026. That crash resulted in one death and multiple injuries.
