Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared that he is ready to lead the opposition into the next general election, but signaled he would step aside if a stronger candidate emerges.

Speaking during an interview on NTV Kenya on Monday, Gachagua said he is prepared to carry the opposition flag and believes he is up to the task. However, he emphasized that unity and strategy should take precedence over personal ambition.

“Mimi niko tayari kuongoza hii opposition lakini kama kutakuwa na mtu mwingine wa nguvu kuniliko na tuamue ni yeye basi mimi nitaunga yeye mkono bora tumtoe Ruto,” he stated. Loosely translated, Gachagua said he is ready to lead the opposition, but if another candidate proves stronger nationally and is agreed upon, he would fully support that person for the sake of unseating President William Ruto.

His remarks are likely to shape ongoing conversations within opposition ranks as political realignments gather momentum. Analysts view his statement as a strategic move aimed at projecting flexibility and fostering coalition-building ahead of 2027.

Gachagua’s willingness to back a consensus candidate may ease tensions among rival camps competing for influence. At the same time, it underscores the opposition’s broader objective of consolidating support across regions to mount a formidable challenge.

As political temperatures gradually rise, his comments signal that negotiations and alliances will play a critical role in determining the ultimate flagbearer against Ruto’s re-election bid.
