At least 10 people have been confirmed dead in Nairobi after flash floods wreaked havoc across the capital on Friday, March 6.

Confirming the fatalities, George Seda said eight of the victims were swept away by fast-rising floodwaters that engulfed several parts of the city following hours of heavy rainfall.

Speaking during a phone interview with Radio Citizen on Saturday, March 7, Seda noted that police and emergency response teams are still collecting information and responding to multiple distress calls from affected areas.

According to the police boss, the situation remains fluid as officers continue to assess the scale of destruction left behind by the floods.

“Eight people were swept away by the fast-moving waters,” Seda said, adding that authorities fear the number could rise as rescue and recovery operations continue across the county.

Seda also revealed that several residents were trapped inside their vehicles after major roads and highways were submerged by floodwaters. Some of the victims are believed to have died while inside their cars after being caught in raging waters in different parts of the capital.

In addition to the drowning cases, two other people reportedly died in separate electrocution incidents during the floods. The electrocutions occurred in different parts of the county after electrical lines came into contact with floodwater, creating a deadly hazard for residents attempting to navigate the flooded areas.

Emergency responders, including police and humanitarian teams, spent much of the night conducting rescue operations and helping stranded motorists and residents move to safer areas.

The heavy downpour caused widespread flooding across major roads in the city, disrupting transport and leaving hundreds of motorists stranded for hours as water levels rose rapidly in low-lying sections of Nairobi.
