Cabinet Secretary for Health Hon. Aden Duale has officially launched the long-acting injectable HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) known as Lenacapavir, marking the first phase of its nationwide rollout and signaling Kenya’s renewed push to end the HIV epidemic through innovative, people-centred prevention strategies.

The introduction of Lenacapavir represents a significant milestone in the country’s HIV prevention efforts. Unlike daily oral PrEP, the injectable option offers extended protection with fewer doses, a move health officials say will improve adherence, expand access, and reduce new infections among vulnerable populations.

Speaking during the launch, Duale reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening preventive healthcare and ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against HIV. He noted that the rollout aligns with Kenya’s broader universal health coverage agenda and its strategy to accelerate progress toward epidemic control.

The event brought together senior health officials and development partners. Among those present were Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, NASCOP Chief Executive Officer Dr. Andrew Mulwa, and Director of Family Health Dr. Issak Bashir. Dagoretti North MP Hon. Beatrice Elachi also attended, alongside representatives from key global health partners including Dr. Jacqueline Kitulu of the Global Fund, Dr. Richard Amenyah of UNAIDS, Dr. Neema Kimambo of the World Health Organization (WHO), and Jennifer Galbraith representing the United States Government (USG).

Health ministry officials indicated that the first phase of the rollout will prioritize high-burden counties and populations at substantial risk of HIV infection. Authorities expressed optimism that the introduction of long-acting injectable PrEP will enhance prevention choices, reduce stigma associated with daily medication, and move Kenya closer to achieving its national and global HIV targets.
