Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has accused the leadership of the Nairobi City County Assembly of evading duty in a bid to block the tabling of an impeachment motion against Governor Johnson #Sakaja.
In a strongly worded statement, Alai alleged that the Speaker of the County Assembly and the Clerk deliberately absented themselves from office to avoid receiving the impeachment motion targeting the Nairobi governor. He claimed the move was intended to frustrate oversight efforts by members of the assembly.
“The Speaker and the Clerk have run away from office so as not to receive the impeachment motion,” Alai stated, arguing that such actions undermine accountability and transparency within the county government.
The outspoken MCA further termed the development a direct attack on devolution, saying it exposed individuals he described as “the real enemies of devolution in Nairobi.” He called for immediate action to safeguard the integrity of the assembly and ensure that constitutional processes are respected.
Alai maintained that impeachment is a lawful oversight mechanism provided for under the Constitution and county assembly standing orders. He insisted that elected leaders must be allowed to execute their mandate without interference or obstruction.
The remarks are likely to intensify political tensions within the Nairobi County leadership as debate over the proposed impeachment gathers momentum. Efforts to reach the Speaker and the Clerk for comment were not immediately successful.
The situation sets the stage for a potential standoff within the county assembly as MCAs push to formally table the motion.
