At least ten teachers have died in a horrific road accident on Thika Road, leaving colleagues and the wider education community in shock.
The tragedy occurred on Saturday, January 31, 2026, outside City Primary School in Ngara, where teachers had gathered to take part in Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) elections. A 33-seater matatu reportedly lost control and struck the group, killing ten on the spot. Fourteen others were injured and rushed to Guru Nanak MP Shah Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital for urgent treatment.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the matatu veered off the road, colliding with the teachers who were waiting outside the school. Some victims were thrown several meters from the crash site, while others were trapped under the overturned vehicle. Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have lost control due to brake failure.
Videos circulating online show the matatu lying on its side as rescue teams worked to pull out the injured and clear the scene. Emergency responders and police cordoned off the area, temporarily disrupting traffic along the busy highway.
KUPPET elections were suspended immediately following the accident, as authorities focused on assisting victims and investigating the cause of the crash. No official statement has yet been issued by government authorities regarding the incident.
