At least nine people are feared dead following a grisly road accident involving a passenger bus and a matatu at Karai area, Naivasha, along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

The accident occurred early in the morning after the two vehicles collided head-on under unclear circumstances, leaving both badly damaged. Eyewitnesses said the impact was severe, trapping several passengers inside the wreckage as debris scattered across the highway.

Emergency responders, including police officers, Red Cross officials, and local residents, rushed to the scene to assist in rescue operations. Several injured passengers were pulled from the mangled vehicles and rushed to nearby hospitals, including Naivasha Sub-County Hospital, with serious injuries. The exact number of those injured is yet to be confirmed.

Traffic along the highway was temporarily disrupted as rescue efforts continued and authorities worked to clear the road. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes or exercise patience as police managed the situation.

Preliminary reports suggest the accident may have involved speeding or dangerous overtaking, though investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause. Police have since launched inquiries and urged drivers to observe traffic rules, especially along the accident-prone highway.

The Nakuru-Nairobi Highway has witnessed several fatal accidents in recent years, raising renewed concerns over road safety and compliance with traffic regulations.
