Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has launched a fresh attack on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leadership, branding it tired, incompetent and disconnected from the party’s grassroots supporters.
Speaking during a media engagement, the outspoken legislator faulted the process through which ODM’s current leadership was installed, arguing that it violated the party’s constitution and sidelined key organs. Owino demanded the immediate convening of a National Delegates Convention (NDC) to chart a new direction for the party.
“What we are asking is that an NDC meeting be called with immediate effect in ODM. There was no procedure whatsoever in getting the new leadership of ODM in place,” Owino said, warning that continued disregard for internal democracy could weaken the party ahead of future elections.
The MP, who has previously positioned himself as a youthful voice within ODM, said the party urgently needs renewal to remain politically relevant in the post–Raila Odinga era. He accused the current leadership of lacking the energy and vision required to reorganize ODM and reconnect it with voters, particularly the youth.
In remarks likely to stir controversy within the party, Owino openly declared his intention to take over ODM’s leadership. “We want to take the leadership of the party as soon as possible. We want to revamp the party because, as Babu Owino, I have always said that after Baba, it is Babu,” he stated.
Babu’s comments add to growing internal tensions within ODM as factions jostle for influence following the death of long-time party leader Raila Odinga. While some party members have called for unity and stability, others argue that a leadership overhaul is inevitable.
The latest remarks are expected to intensify debate within ODM, potentially setting the stage for a power struggle as ambitious leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. #BabuOwino
