Governorship candidate Babu Owino has announced that a court has halted the planned demolition of Gikomba Market following legal action filed by his team.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Owino said his lawyers moved to court to challenge the proposed demolition, arguing that it would adversely affect thousands of traders who rely on the market for their livelihoods. According to the candidate, the court subsequently issued orders stopping the demolition pending further directions.
Owino described #Gikomba as more than just a trading center, terming it “the heartbeat of thousands of families, small traders and hardworking Kenyans.” He emphasized that any development plans affecting the market must take into account the welfare and dignity of those who depend on it daily for income.
“The rule of law exists to safeguard citizens, especially the vulnerable,” he said, calling on all parties involved to respect the court’s decision and allow due process to take its course.
The outspoken legislator maintained that while development is important, it should not come at the expense of ordinary wananchi. He urged authorities to engage stakeholders and seek solutions that balance modernization efforts with the protection of small businesses.
The case is expected to proceed in court as parties await further guidance. Meanwhile, traders at Gikomba Market have welcomed the temporary reprieve, expressing hope that their businesses will be protected as discussions on the market’s future continue.
Owino concluded by reiterating his commitment to defending livelihoods and upholding the rule of law.
