When news broke of the death of Cyrus Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo on the morning of 13 December 2025, Kenya lost one of its most distinctive – and divisive – public figures. Jirongo was born on 21 March 1961 and rose to national prominence at a young age during the early 1990s as a charismatic organiser of the Youth for KANU ’92 (YK’92) movement – a group that played a pivotal role in mobilising support for President Daniel arap Moi during Kenya’s first multiparty elections. His early influence positioned him as one of the country’s foremost youth leaders, and his association with powerful political networks set the stage for his future in politics and business.
Yet whatever public scrutiny might have surrounded his career, those closest to him — including his long‑time friend George Khaniri – remembered Jirongo most for his remarkable generosity. Khaniri recounted an evocative story from their personal relationship: one ordinary day at ABC Place along Waiyaki Way, Mr. Jirongo, unexpectedly, pulled up beside him, called him to his car, opened the boot, and produced Ksh 500,000 in cash which he insisted Khaniri take — unrequested and unsolicited. Jirongo reportedly had the money packed in two large boxes, a gesture emblematic of his penchant for giving.
“It was on a Wednesday and by the following Tuesday, Jirongo was again broke and came for some 50,000 from me – meaning the ‘generous Jirongo’ had dished out the whole boxes of cash to friends,” Khaniri reminisced.

At a young age, he also ventured into real estate and other commercial enterprises, publicly claiming to have become a billionaire — an assertion that shaped public perception of him as a self‑made tycoon. He developed several estate projects around Nairobi and invested in companies such as Sololo Outlets and Kuza Farms & Allied Limited.
Stories from the 1990s even recall how his financial influence became so pronounced that the newly introduced Sh500 banknote was colloquially nicknamed “Jirongo” due to his conspicuous use of the bills during political campaigns and social engagements.

However, Jirongo’s financial narrative was far from straightforward. Despite early success and lavish spending, many of his business ventures would later struggle under the weight of mounting debts. The collision occurred around 3:00 a.m., tragically cutting short the life of a man whose presence had loomed large in Kenyan public life for more than three decades.
News of his passing drew an outpouring of reactions from across the political spectrum. President William Ruto mourned him as a “relentless go‑getter, a seasoned businessman, and a consummate politician,” noting that Jirongo’s generosity and entrepreneurial spirit left an indelible mark on Kenya’s political history.
Other leaders echoed similar sentiments, highlighting his bold ideas, deep concern for communities, and resolute dedication to public service. Whether lauded as a courageous leader, criticised for his business missteps, or remembered as a loyal friend, Jirongo’s death prompted national reflection on a life lived in both the spotlight and the shadows.
