The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has debunked claims circulating online that investigators recovered Ksh250 million during a raid at the home of a senior Nairobi County official, insisting that the amount seized was Ksh65.3 million.
The clarification comes after social media posts and online reports alleged that a significantly larger sum had been recovered during the operation, triggering widespread speculation and accusations of possible misconduct in the handling of the money.
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 4, the anti-graft agency reaffirmed that Ksh65.3 million was recovered and recorded as part of an ongoing corruption investigation.
The commission dismissed suggestions that any funds were unaccounted for, describing the viral reports as false and misleading.
Responding to one of the claims online, the EACC stated: “Unfortunately, you are misinformed by fake news.”
The agency further urged Kenyans to verify information through its official communication channels and disregard unverified reports circulating on social media.
“Please pay attention to the official statement above. Any other statements aside from that is fake,” the commission added.
The recovery was made during a search operation targeting Patrick Analo Akivaga, the Chief Officer for Urban Development and Planning at Nairobi City County, as detectives investigate alleged corruption and abuse of office within the county government.
According to the EACC, investigators recovered Ksh51.3 million in cash and USD113,000 (approximately Ksh14 million) from Akivaga’s residence in Syokimau and from his vehicle.
The operation also yielded several items believed to be relevant to the probe, including laptops, mobile electronic devices, title deeds, motor vehicle logbooks, and sale agreements relating to land and motor vehicles.
In addition, detectives obtained approved planning documents from Nairobi County, which have been seized as exhibits to support ongoing investigations.
