ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has reiterated his commitment to safeguarding the legacy of Raila Odinga, declaring that he will not allow the party to be undermined. Sifuna spoke during the celebrations of Raila Odinga’s 81st birthday, where Ida Odinga, the former Prime Minister’s wife, was present.

“It will not be me who wrecks Mzee’s party; it will not be Sifuna. I made that promise to Baba,” Sifuna said. He called on members of ODM to set aside past grievances, emphasizing his willingness to reconcile with those who have opposed or insulted him. “To the members of ODM, regardless of how badly you have insulted me, I am ready to extend an olive branch so that we can sit down and iron out our issues,” he added.

Sifuna also reflected on the shared responsibility of mourning the late party leader, acknowledging that Raila Odinga belonged to many people. “I have given you my excuse why I have not come back to Kang’o. We need to create space for other people to also mourn Mzee. We will not hog his grave; we will allow other people who also loved Mzee to come and mourn with you,” he said.

He praised the strength and resilience of party members in honoring Odinga’s legacy. “You have done that with a lot of strength. I don’t honestly know how you’ve been able to do it,” Sifuna remarked.

Political analysts say Sifuna’s comments underscore his determination to unify ODM ahead of critical political contests while respecting the enduring influence of Raila Odinga. By extending reconciliation and emphasizing collective mourning, Sifuna is positioning himself as a bridge-builder, committed to ensuring the party remains cohesive and true to its founding principles.
