At least eight people lost their lives and several others were seriously injured following a fatal road accident involving a matatu and a trailer along the Eldoret–Webuye highway in Lugari on Tuesday night.
Police said the crash occurred after a speeding 14-seater matatu lost control, crossed lanes, and slammed into a stationary trailer that was transporting fertiliser. The impact left the matatu badly mangled, killing most of the passengers instantly.
Western Region Police Commander Issa Mohamud confirmed that seven victims died at the scene, while an eighth succumbed to injuries while being rushed to hospital for treatment. Five other passengers sustained serious injuries and were taken to nearby medical facilities, where they are receiving care.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the trailer had been parked by the roadside after developing mechanical problems. Authorities said the trailer driver fled the scene immediately after the accident, and efforts are underway to trace him.
Images and videos circulating widely on social media showed the extent of the destruction, with the matatu’s body completely crushed. Broken seats, shattered glass, deflated tyres, and twisted metal were visible at the crash site, highlighting the force of the collision.
In the aftermath of the accident, residents gathered at the scene, with some reportedly scrambling to collect fertiliser that had spilled from the trailer, prompting police to intervene and secure the area.
The latest incident has once again drawn attention to the rising number of fatal road accidents across the country, particularly during the festive season. Authorities have repeatedly warned motorists against speeding and reckless driving, urging strict adherence to traffic rules to prevent further loss of life.
Police said investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
