The simmering rivalry over Mount Kenya’s political dominance has escalated sharply, with former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria issuing a bold challenge to Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua.
Kuria, visibly angered by recent events especially the attacks on Lamu Woman Representative Monicah Marubu Muthoni, publicly dared Gachagua to visit his political backyard, warning that he would personally confront him if he attempted to do so.
“I dare you to step foot in my home ground if you are a man,” Kuria declared, in remarks that have since ignited intense political debate.
The confrontation follows claims by Kuria that Gachagua played a role in inciting hostility against Lamu Woman Representative Ms Muthoni. The Woman Representative was recently involved in a controversial incident that drew national attention after chaos erupted at a funeral in Murang’a County, forcing her to be whisked away by security officers. Kuria alleges that inflammatory political rhetoric from senior leaders contributed to the hostile environment that put her safety at risk.
The latest outburst comes just days before Gachagua’s planned visit to Githunguri Constituency on Sunday, January 4, 2026. Githunguri is widely considered part of Kuria’s political stronghold, adding weight to the former CS’s warning and raising concerns over possible tensions during the visit.
Political observers say the exchange reflects a growing struggle for influence in the Mount Kenya region, as leaders jostle to consolidate support ahead of future political realignments. The region remains a key voting bloc, making it a focal point for competing power centers.
While Kuria’s remarks have energized his supporters, critics have warned that such statements risk inflaming tensions and undermining peace. Calls have emerged urging political leaders to exercise restraint and avoid language that could provoke unrest.
As the political temperature continues to rise, attention now turns to whether Gachagua will proceed with his scheduled visit and how security agencies will manage the situation amid heightened rhetoric. The unfolding standoff underscores the increasingly confrontational nature of Kenya’s regional politics.
