An estranged wife of a senior county officer in Kakamega has won a protracted court battle that took more than three years to conclude.

Magdalene (not her real name) divorced the county official three years ago after discovering that he had secretly married another woman, a teacher at a local secondary school.

Recounting the events that led to the breakdown of her long years of marriage, Magdalene said her former husband openly warned her that she would no longer be tolerated in the home because another woman – whom he referred to as a “replacement” – was on the way.

“One night he came home late and told me to prepare to leave his house. When I asked him about the children, he calmly told me to leave them behind and walk away. That moment really broke me,” she recalled.

A second incident soon followed. Magdalene said that on another night, her husband pushed her off the bed and slapped her hard on the left cheek after she questioned why he had suddenly lost interest in her.

Those two incidents became turning points. They convinced her to plan a safe exit and begin life as a single mother. However, she was reluctant to walk away empty-handed, having helped build the family’s assets and shared two children with him.

She discreetly began exploring legal avenues to repossess one of the flats they jointly owned. Her efforts were swiftly countered when her husband rushed to court to block all her attempts.

Magdalene eventually moved out and rented her own house about six kilometres away. She said the move was deliberate, aimed at avoiding confrontation, public attention, or embarrassment. She confided only in her 65-year-old mother, who later connected her with a local traditional healer and spiritual counsellor identified as Dr Ngoso.

Two days later, Magdalene met the healer and narrated her ordeal, including how she had been forced out of her matrimonial home and denied access to jointly owned property. After listening to her story, the healer advised her to confront the issue through legal means to reclaim her rights as a divorced mother who should never walk out of her matrimonial home empty-handed.

Three days later, the matter came up for mention in court, a session the healer is said to have attended discreetly. On the ruling date, he again appeared in court carrying what were described as his work tools, unnoticed by most people except Magdalene.

Ultimately, the ruling favoured her. The judge granted Magdalene administrative rights over one of the property blocks, valued at approximately KSh 8 million. Thanks to the traditional healer Dr. Ngoso.
