The government has effectively reintroduced Covid-19-style health precautions this festive season, warning Kenyans to remain vigilant as the risk of contagious disease transmission rises during end-year celebrations.

In a public health advisory issued on Sunday, December 21, the Ministry of Health cautioned that the holiday period creates conditions similar to those witnessed during the Covid-19 pandemic, with increased travel, crowded gatherings, and frequent social interactions heightening the spread of infectious illnesses.

Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni noted that festive activities often involve close contact in poorly ventilated spaces, making it easier for diseases to circulate. She urged Kenyans to adopt preventive measures reminiscent of pandemic-era guidelines, including strict personal hygiene and responsible social behaviour.

The PS advised against sharing food, utensils, and personal items, warning that such practices significantly increase infection risks. Kenyans were also urged to wash their hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitisers, especially before handling food.

In guidance echoing Covid-19 protocols, Muthoni asked members of the public to cover coughs and sneezes, avoid touching their faces, and stay away from social events if they exhibit symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Those whose symptoms worsen were advised to seek medical attention early.

She further encouraged celebrations in outdoor or well-ventilated spaces, limiting crowding and the duration of events. Special caution was advised when interacting with vulnerable groups, including older adults, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

Additionally, the Ministry called on Kenyans to ensure their vaccinations are up to date and to comply with local public health guidance.

Health officials said the advisory comes at a time of heightened nationwide movement as people travel to reunite with family and friends. The government stressed that responsible celebrations, guided by simple preventive measures, are critical to protecting individuals, families, and communities during the festive season.
