Veteran screen icon Robert Duvall, celebrated for his commanding performances in some of Hollywood’s most enduring films, has died at 95.

According to a statement released by his publicist on behalf of his wife, Luciana, the Academy Award-winning actor passed away peacefully at his residence in Middleburg, Virginia, on Sunday.

In a heartfelt tribute, Luciana described her husband as far more than the legendary figure recognized by audiences worldwide. “To many, he was an Oscar-winning performer, a director, and a master storyteller,” she said. “To me, he was my whole world. He loved his work deeply, but he loved life just as much – whether that meant bringing a character to life, sharing a memorable meal, or captivating a room with his stories.”

Duvall’s remarkable career spanned more than 60 years, with standout roles in The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, and Apocalypse Now. In the crime saga directed by Francis Ford Coppola, he portrayed Tom Hagen, the loyal consigliere to the Corleone family – a performance that cemented his place in cinematic history.

His role as Lieutenant Colonel William Kilgore in Apocalypse Now became equally iconic. Though his screen time was limited, his character left a lasting impression, particularly with the now-famous line about the “smell of napalm in the morning,” which became one of the most quoted moments in film history.

Coppola expressed deep sorrow at Duvall’s passing, describing him as a foundational presence in his production company, American Zoetrope, and an extraordinary talent whose legacy will endure.

Fellow actor Al Pacino, who starred alongside Duvall in The Godfather, said working with him was a privilege. He praised Duvall’s instinctive talent and profound understanding of his craft, adding simply: “I will miss him.”
