Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS), Mr. Douglas Kanja, on Thursday held a consultative meeting with leaders of the United Opposition at his office, reaffirming the Service’s commitment to neutrality and equal service to all Kenyans.

The IG was accompanied by his deputies – Mr. Eliud Lagat of the Kenya Police Service and Mr. Gilbert Masengeli of the Administration Police Service – as well as Mr. John Onyango, Senior Assistant Inspector General, representing the Director of Criminal Investigations. Senior officers from NPS headquarters were also in attendance.

During the meeting, opposition leaders formally presented a petition to the Inspector General. Mr. Kanja received the document and assured the delegation that its contents would be reviewed thoroughly and addressed in line with the law.

He emphasized that the National Police Service remains politically impartial and dedicated to serving the public without bias, intimidation, or preferential treatment.

The IG also reminded political leaders of the importance of notifying police in advance of public meetings or countrywide engagements to allow for adequate security planning and deployment.

Mr. Kanja further called for stronger cooperation between political actors and law enforcement agencies to enhance the effectiveness of investigations and follow-ups whenever incidents are reported. Both sides agreed that all security-related incidents should be formally reported and recorded through established legal procedures.

Concluding the engagement, the Inspector General expressed optimism about fostering sustained, open, and constructive engagement between the police and political leaders, anchored on mutual trust and regular feedback.

The opposition delegation was led by Wiper Patriotic Front leader Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka and included DCP leader Hon. Rigathi Gachagua, and People’s Liberation Party leader Hon. Martha Karua.
