Minority Leader Junet Mohammed has fired back at ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna over allegations regarding the handling of party election agents during the 2022 General Election. In a detailed press statement, Junet accused Sifuna of politicizing the issue while shifting blame away from external actors.

Junet said the question of why election agents were neither paid nor present at designated polling stations was straightforward and tied to funds released by former President Uhuru Kenyatta. According to Junet, the funds intended for ODM agents were handed over to Uhuru Kenyatta’s brother, Muhoho Kenyatta, who appointed an aide, Peter Mburu, to oversee recruitment and payment.

“Mr. Mburu presented himself as an IT expert, claiming he could prevent any manipulation of results by the IEBC. He remains an aide of Uhuru Kenyatta and was recently in Nigeria with Uhuru Kenyatta and Kalonzo Musyoka,” Junet said.

Junet described Muhoho Kenyatta’s office in Westlands as highly restricted, accessible to very few, including ODM’s presidential candidate Raila Odinga. It was from this office, Junet claims, that funds and logistics were supposedly managed – but he insists no agents were actually procured for Odinga in critical regions such as Mt. Kenya and Luo Nyanza.

The MP defended his loyalty to the late party leader, Raila Odinga, noting that his appointment as Leader of Minority in the National Assembly was proof of his fidelity and dedication to party assignments.

Junet challenged Sifuna, Uhuru Kenyatta, Muhoho Kenyatta, and Peter Mburu to publicly explain the handling of election agents’ funds and who was ultimately responsible for the failures that affected ODM’s performance in 2022.

“This is not conjecture; these are verifiable facts. Kenyans deserve the truth about the handling of agents’ money, who controlled it, who mishandled it, and who cost us the election,” the Suna East lawmaker said, signaling that more revelations could follow.

The exchange between #Junet Mohamed and Senator Edwin #Sifuna underscores deep divisions within ODM Party and highlights lingering controversies from the lost 2022 elections, which continue to influence party dynamics ahead of the 2027 General Election.
