Skywatchers across Kenya are in for a spectacular celestial display tonight, January 10, 2026, as Jupiter reaches opposition, making it appear larger and brighter than at any other time of the year.

In a statement, the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) said the phenomenon occurs when Earth moves directly between the Sun and Jupiter, placing the giant planet opposite the Sun in the sky. This alignment allows Jupiter to shine intensely and remain visible from dusk until dawn.

During opposition, Jupiter is at its closest point to Earth, offering exceptional viewing conditions even with the naked eye. Under clear skies, the planet will appear as a brilliant, steady object, outshining most stars. With binoculars or a small telescope, observers may also spot Jupiter’s four largest moons – Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto – lined up around it.

Astronomers note that the event happens roughly once every year, but each opposition presents a unique opportunity for both professional scientists and amateur stargazers to study the gas giant’s atmospheric bands and storm systems.

KSA has encouraged the public to step outside after sunset and look toward the eastern sky, where Jupiter will rise prominently. Clear weather permitting, tonight’s display promises one of the most striking astronomical sights of the year.
