Homa Bay County Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has said that ongoing negotiations between ODM and UDA can only succeed if the ruling party agrees to the principle of zoning.

Speaking on Saturday, Kaluma emphasized that for any meaningful collaboration to take shape, UDA must respect the agreement that key elective positions are rotated among regions. “Negotiations will not move forward unless UDA acknowledges the zoning arrangements. Without that, there is no common ground for discussion,” he said.

Kaluma noted that zoning has historically been a crucial factor in Kenyan politics, ensuring equitable distribution of leadership positions and fostering inclusivity. He argued that disregarding this principle could create tensions that would derail any alliance between the two parties.

The lawmaker highlighted that while both parties have expressed interest in forming a coalition ahead of the 2027 elections, disagreements over leadership positions have slowed progress. “We are willing to engage and collaborate, but it must be done in a manner that respects agreed-upon zoning and fairness to all regions,” Kaluma stated.

Political observers say that the ODM-UDA talks are closely watched across the country, as the two parties seek to consolidate support ahead of the next general elections. Analysts note that zoning disputes have the potential to stall coalition talks if not addressed promptly.

Kaluma’s remarks underscore the delicate nature of negotiations between major political formations in Kenya, signaling that any successful partnership will require compromise and adherence to established political agreements.
