The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has directed the removal of all roadside developments along Mombasa Road, spanning from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to James Gichuru Junction.
In a notice dated January 13, 2026, KeNHA instructed owners of billboards, tree nurseries, temporary structures, and other roadside installations to dismantle and remove them within 14 days. The move is intended to clear the way for capacity enhancement, landscaping, and beautification works along the 27-kilometre stretch.
“This is to notify all roadside development owners/operators within the specified road reserve of the commencement of landscaping and beautification works,” KeNHA stated. The Authority warned that any structures left beyond the stipulated period would be removed without the owners’ consent.
The directive follows the handover of the Mombasa Road renovation project to the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) three weeks ago. A site inspection was conducted on December 19, 2025, led by KeNHA’s Director of Maintenance, Ezekiel Fukwo, alongside CRBC contractors and technical teams from the Authority.
KeNHA emphasized that the project goes beyond aesthetics, incorporating infrastructure and safety upgrades aimed at improving user experience. The works will feature environmentally sustainable designs intended to enhance the highway’s visual appeal while protecting the surrounding environment.
“Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly improve the area’s aesthetic appeal, promote environmental sustainability, and upgrade infrastructure and safety standards within the region,” the Authority noted.
The multi-million shilling project marks a major step in transforming Mombasa Road into a modern, safe, and visually appealing corridor, linking Nairobi’s central business district to the country’s busiest airport.
