The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced an impending traffic disruption along the busy corridor linking Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to James Gichuru Road following the commencement of major road expansion works.

In a statement issued on Thursday, January 15, KeNHA confirmed that large-scale improvement works are underway along the JKIA–ABC Place route in Westlands. The project targets a 27-kilometre stretch and is designed to improve road capacity, enhance safety, and ease chronic traffic congestion affecting Nairobi’s western and eastern gateways.

According to the Authority, the works involve capacity enhancement, landscaping, and beautification along the James Gichuru–JKIA (A8/B10) Highway. Images released by KeNHA show active construction on site, including excavation, landscaping operations, and the deployment of heavy machinery such as excavators and tipper trucks. Survey and inspection teams have also been stationed along the corridor to monitor progress and ensure strict adherence to the approved road design.

Motorists using the affected route have been urged to exercise caution, obey traffic signage, and reduce speed while passing through construction zones. KeNHA noted that temporary traffic disruptions are inevitable but necessary to allow for the smooth execution of the project.

The Authority apologised for the inconvenience caused and appealed for cooperation from road users to ensure safety and timely completion of the works.

The development comes just days after KeNHA issued a notice ordering the removal of all roadside developments within the road reserve. Owners of billboards, tree nurseries, and temporary structures were given 14 days to clear the area, with a warning that non-compliant structures would be removed without further notice to pave the way for the project.
