Kenya Railways has announced a temporary suspension of the Limuru Commuter Train service, disrupting travel for passengers who rely on the route between Nairobi Central Station and Limuru.

In a notice issued on Thursday, January 8, the Corporation stated that the commuter train would not operate on Friday, January 9, 2026, citing unavoidable circumstances. However, Kenya Railways did not disclose the specific reason behind the interruption.

“The Nairobi Commuter Rail Service train that normally plies the Nairobi Central Station to Limuru route in the morning and evening will not run tomorrow due to unavoidable circumstances,” the notice read.

The Limuru commuter train, which operates under the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, runs morning and evening schedules and serves thousands of passengers daily commuting to Nairobi’s Central Business District for work, school, and other activities.

The sudden suspension is expected to inconvenience many commuters, particularly as Kenyans resume normal routines following the festive season. Kenya Railways, however, assured passengers that the disruption is temporary, confirming that normal services will resume on Monday, January 12, 2026.

In a statement signed by Managing Director Philip Mainga, the Corporation apologised for the inconvenience and urged affected passengers to seek alternative transport arrangements.

The Nairobi Commuter Rail Service remains a preferred option for many commuters, offering a faster, safer, and more affordable alternative to road transport while helping ease Nairobi’s chronic traffic congestion.
