Kenya is at risk of losing its hosting rights for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) if it fails to remit the required KSh 3.5 billion hosting fee by March 30.

This warning was issued by Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, who noted that the delay could jeopardize the country’s role in the highly anticipated continental tournament.

According to Mwangi, co-hosts Uganda and Tanzania have already fulfilled their financial obligations, placing Kenya in a vulnerable position within the joint hosting arrangement. The #AFCON tournament, which is expected to boost regional visibility, tourism, and infrastructure development, requires strict adherence to timelines set by organizers. Failure by one partner to meet its commitments could force a restructuring of hosting responsibilities.

The potential loss would be a major setback for Kenya’s sporting ambitions and its broader strategy to position itself as a hub for international events. Beyond football, AFCON presents economic opportunities ranging from hospitality to transport and trade. Mwangi emphasized the urgency of the matter, urging relevant authorities to act swiftly to secure Kenya’s place.

As the deadline approaches, attention now shifts to whether the government will meet the financial requirement and safeguard the country’s participation in hosting one of Africa’s biggest sporting spectacles.
