Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale on Tuesday raised questions surrounding the death of veteran politician and businessman Cyrus Jirongo, daring National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to publicly disclose his final conversations with the late leader.

Speaking during Jirongo’s burial ceremony in Lumakanda, Khalwale said Kenyans deserved greater transparency regarding Jirongo’s final days, given his long-standing role in national politics and close associations with several senior leaders. He argued that openness from Speaker Wetang’ula would help dispel speculation and restore public confidence amid growing debate over the circumstances of Jirongo’s death.

“Cyrus Jirongo was not an ordinary citizen. He was a key political figure whose voice and influence shaped this country’s political landscape,” Khalwale said. “Those who were closest to him, including Speaker Wetang’ula, owe the nation clarity on their last engagements with him.”

The outspoken senator stressed that his remarks were not meant to cast blame but to promote honesty and accountability among political leaders. He noted that Wetang’ula and Jirongo shared a long political history rooted in Western Kenya politics, making the Speaker’s insights particularly significant.

“I have on several occasions seen Jirongo enter Wetang’ula’s office because his office is close to mine,” Khalwale said. “What business were they discussing?”

Khalwale warned against what he described as a culture of silence among the political elite, saying it often fuels suspicion and misinformation. He urged leaders to address public concerns openly rather than dismissing them as politically motivated.

“Khaniri has fully disclosed what happened on the last day he met Jirongo. We know about their encounter,” Khalwale said. “Why, then, is Wetang’ula keeping quiet on this matter?”

The senator further claimed that Jirongo had interests in Ikolomani gold, raising questions about whether this could have played a role in his death. “We need to know if this is another reason he was taken out,” he said.

Khalwale’s remarks have drawn mixed reactions, with some leaders terming them insensitive, while others insist transparency is necessary given Jirongo’s prominence.

Jirongo’s death has continued to spark national debate, underscoring his enduring influence in Kenya’s mainstream politics.
