Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has urged leaders allied to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to shift their focus to other elective positions instead of agitating for the presidency and deputy presidency under the emerging broad-based political arrangement.
Speaking on Friday, February 27, Suba South for a women enteprise empowerment funds drive hosted by the National Treasury CS Hon. John Mbadi,
Kindiki maintained that the current power-sharing framework was designed to accommodate diverse political interests, but cautioned against early contests over the country’s top two seats.
He emphasized that government opportunities extend beyond the presidency and deputy presidency, encouraging ODM figures to prepare for alternative leadership roles.
“All of us can have a place in the broad-based government because there are enough spaces for all the people of Kenya. All the communities of Kenya can have a stake in the government,” he added.
Kindiki noted that the inclusive arrangement was not structured to sideline any political formation, but to stabilize the country and accelerate development. He said communities that have previously remained in opposition now have an opportunity to directly participate in governance and access national development programs.
The Deputy President further observed that leaders from the Nyanza region have expressed a desire to move away from prolonged opposition politics and instead pursue tangible development gains.
According to him, the shift reflects a broader demand for infrastructure, economic empowerment, and representation in national decision-making.
Prof Kindiki also acknowledged the role played by the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in steering ODM toward cooperation within government structures, describing the move as one aimed at fostering unity and shared progress.
His remarks come amid heightened political debate over speculation that ODM is eyeing the deputy presidency in the 2027 General Election. Recently, ODM leader Oburu Odinga indicated that while the party maintains cordial relations with Kindiki, its ambitions for higher office remain open for discussion.
