A significant fire broke out at a multi-story apartment complex behind Garden City in Kasarani Constituency on the afternoon of Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Footage circulating online shows intense flames consuming the upper floors of the building, with thick, dark smoke rising into the sky and shrouding the entire facade. The situation is made more dangerous by a nearby high-voltage power line that has caught fire, sending bright sparks and molten material raining down toward the street below.
Residents in the vicinity were seen either evacuating their vehicles or watching the blaze from a safe distance as the fire spread quickly across the balconies. The combination of the electrical sparks and the flames has created a particularly hazardous scenario for anyone near the building, as well as the neighborhood’s power infrastructure.
At the time of reporting, no injuries had been confirmed, and emergency services had not yet arrived on the scene. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the fire.
Fires are unfortunately not new to Kasarani. On October 25, 2025, a fire on the fourth floor of a Mwiki apartment claimed the lives of a 30-year-old woman and her three-year-old son due to carbon monoxide inhalation. In October 2017, a residential block at Kasarani Police Station caught fire after a gas cylinder exploded, injuring one officer and destroying property worth millions.
Additionally, on April 14, 2018, the Shell Petrol Station opposite Naivas Supermarket in Kasarani suffered extensive damage when a motorist drove off with a fuel pump nozzle still attached, according to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
Authorities are expected to investigate the latest incident to determine the cause and assess the full extent of the damage.
