Jubilee Party deputy leader and 2027 presidential aspirant Fred Matiang’i has called on the opposition coalition to adopt a transparent and all-inclusive method in choosing its flagbearer.

Addressing the media in Nairobi on Wednesday, February 18, shortly after receiving endorsement from the PNU party, Matiang’i stressed that the credibility of the selection process would determine the strength of the alliance. He argued that how the candidate is picked is just as critical as who ultimately carries the ticket.

The former Interior Cabinet Secretary insisted that all stakeholders including ordinary citizens must be part of the decision-making framework. According to him, any arrangement reached without broad consultation would lack legitimacy.

“In coalition politics, the procedure matters just as much as the final decision,” Matiang’i said. “If several leaders express interest, some will inevitably step aside. Those who do must be confident enough to tell their supporters that the process was fair, open and convincing.”

He emphasized that unity cannot be achieved behind closed doors, urging opposition leaders to embrace openness and public participation in identifying the candidate who will challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Matiang’i’s remarks come amid heightened competition within the opposition ranks, as key principals intensify efforts to secure backing for the presidential ticket. Despite the growing rivalry, coalition leaders have consistently maintained that they will rally behind a single candidate to avoid splitting votes and weakening their chances against Ruto.

Earlier, the alliance had indicated that its presidential flagbearer would be unveiled in April 2026. However, emerging reports suggest that some leaders are advocating for a later announcement, possibly in early 2027.

As Kenyans await clarity, opposition figures continue holding joint rallies across the country, even as each publicly signals readiness to contest for the top seat – a development that has fueled speculation about internal cohesion.

Nonetheless, coalition leaders insist their partnership remains intact. Matiang’i and Kalonzo Musyoka are currently viewed as the leading contenders for the ticket.

Speaking at a separate event, Matiang’i dismissed claims of division within the alliance. “Those anticipating cracks among us will be disappointed. We remain united and focused,” he said.

The opposition coalition brings together prominent political figures including Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa and Justin Muturi.
