Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has appealed to the Luhya community to support President William Ruto’s bid for a second term, warning that failure to do so could see the community edged out of government influence.
Speaking during a radio interview yesterday in his Maragoli dialect, Mudavadi cautioned that political pressure from leaders allied to the Luo community was steadily mounting around the presidency and could soon yield results to the disadvantage of the Luhya people. He urged his community to remain politically alert and strategically aligned with the current administration.
Mudavadi argued that supporters of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga had already found their way into government after Odinga’s decision to work with the Kenya Kwanza administration, noting that political relevance is best secured from within government rather than from the opposition. He called on Luhya voters not to “waste time outside government” at a moment when political realignments were actively taking place.
The Prime Cabinet Secretary further maintained that his presence in government directly benefits the Luhya community, saying that his senior role should be seen as collective representation for the region. He insisted that his counsel deserved respect and attention given his proximity to power and involvement in key state decisions.
Mudavadi joined President Ruto’s administration in 2022 following a political reunion between his then Amani National Congress (ANC) Party and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). He was subsequently appointed both Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.
Since then, President Ruto has entrusted Mudavadi with extensive responsibilities locally and internationally. In a move aimed at consolidating his focus on government, Mudavadi later dissolved the ANC party, saying the decision would help reduce political distractions and allow him to fully support the president in delivering the Kenya Kwanza manifesto.
