Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has expressed dissatisfaction over the circumstances surrounding the death of veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
Speaking on Monday in Chepchoina Ward, the outspoken governor questioned the sequence of events leading to Jirongo’s death, saying there were glaring inconsistencies that require clear answers. Natembeya noted that the late politician was reportedly in Nairobi attending a meeting with friends at around 9 a.m., yet barely two hours later, he was found dead in Naivasha. The governor said the timeline raised serious questions that cannot be ignored.
He further sought clarification on reports indicating that Jirongo died while heading home, even as conflicting information suggested that his vehicle was actually driving back toward Nairobi at the time of the incident. According to Natembeya, such contradictions only deepen public suspicion and demand a thorough explanation from those who were with Jirongo before his death.
“Wale ambao walikuwa na yeye lazima watuambie nini kilifanyika. Tumepoteza watu wetu huku wengi, na jambo la kushangaza ni kwamba hakuna kiongozi wa Waluhya serikalini anauliza hili jambo,” the governor said, calling out leaders for what he termed as silence on the matter.
Other leaders present echoed Natembeya’s concerns, questioning why no eyewitnesses have come forward to give a detailed account of what transpired, including passengers who were reportedly travelling in the Climax Bus involved in the incident. They also cast doubt on the conduct of the bus driver, describing his handling of the matter as unusually casual and possibly premeditated.
Cyrus Jirongo reportedly died on the spot after being involved in a fatal road accident along the Nakuru–Naivasha Highway. However, leaders insist that a comprehensive investigation is necessary to establish the truth and restore public confidence.
