The government has commissioned the Sondu-Ndhiwa-Homa Bay-Awendo 132kV transmission line, a major upgrade expected to significantly improve electricity reliability across Nyanza and parts of Western Kenya.

Implemented by the State Department of Energy in collaboration with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO), the project aims to ease long-standing strain on the regional power network. Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo oversaw inter-agency coordination during the rollout.

Energy officials said the new line has already reduced pressure on the heavily loaded Muhoroni – Chemosit corridor, which had been operating close to its limits and posed a risk to grid stability. With the new connection in place, Sondu is now supplying about 27MW to Ndhiwa, while demand on the Muhoroni – Chemosit line has dropped to roughly 40MW.

Power flows between Muhoroni and Kisumu have also been rebalanced, allowing electricity to be shared more efficiently across the network. Engineers say the additional transmission path will lower the risk of overloads and widespread outages, while creating room for future growth in demand.

Residents and businesses in Ndhiwa, Awendo, Homa Bay and neighbouring areas are expected to enjoy a steadier power supply after years of frequent interruptions. Planners believe the improved reliability will help unlock previously suppressed demand and support economic activity in the region.

Kenya’s electricity demand has continued to rise, with peak consumption reaching about 2,439MW in December 2025. While generation capacity has expanded, authorities note that grid reinforcement remains critical to ensure stable and dependable power nationwide.
