ODM Party Leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has formally signalled his intention to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election, declaring himself the automatic presidential candidate should the party opt to run independently.

Oburu made the announcement on the eve of the New Year 2026, setting the tone for ODM’s political direction as the country edges closer to the next electoral cycle.

Speaking with authority, the party boss stated that the ODM constitution is explicit on the matter of leadership, leaving no ambiguity about the party’s presidential flag bearer in the event it goes it alone. “If ODM decides to go it alone, our constitution already has a presidential candidate. That candidate is the party leader, and I am the party leader,” he said, affirming his position as the party’s standard-bearer.

He further emphasized that all strategic decisions must be concluded well before 2027 to avoid uncertainty and internal confusion.

According to Mr. Oburu Odinga, the party will, within the course of 2026, clearly determine whether it will pursue an independent presidential bid or enter into a coalition with other political formations. This, he noted, is essential for effective planning and mobilisation.

Oburu also issued a stern warning to ODM members harbouring ambitions of clinching the party’s presidential ticket, insisting that the constitution grants him an automatic advantage. He advised such individuals to seek opportunities elsewhere if they wish to pursue the presidency.

Addressing concerns over possible internal divisions, he dismissed comparisons to the factional wrangles that plagued the former Jubilee Party, asserting that ODM remains united and focused. He added that any continued cooperation with UDA would depend on the full implementation of the 10-point working agenda and the memorandum of understanding signed in February last year.

The veteran politician, currently serving as Siaya County senator, also rejected claims that ODM has been “sold,” insisting the party remains firmly under its original ownership and leadership as it charts its path to 2027.
