Kenya’s main opposition party has stepped into the growing fuel import controversy, urging restraint as investigations continue and cautioning against premature blame on senior government officials. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) says the focus should remain on facts rather than political pressure.

In a statement issued on April 7, party leader Oburu Odinga defended Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi and Trade CS Lee Kinyanjui, warning that public attacks on officials not directly responsible for financial management could interfere with ongoing probes. He cautioned against what he termed “public lynching,” arguing it risks politicising the matter.

At the same time, ODM maintained that no one should be shielded if found culpable. The party emphasised that both cabinet secretaries must face legal consequences should investigations establish their involvement.

“We wish to reiterate that the fight against corruption is a central pillar of the ODM–UDA 10-point agenda. The seriousness with which this administration confronts this vice will be the true measure of its commitment to integrity, accountability, and good governance.”

ODM further linked the matter to its broader anti-corruption stance under the ODM–UDA 10-point agenda, calling for transparent and independent investigations. The party also expressed support for the administration of William Ruto, urging it to demonstrate firm commitment to accountability.

The statement follows recent arrests tied to the scandal, including former Petroleum PS Mohammed Liban, ex-EPRA director general Daniel Kiptoo, and former KPC MD Joe Sang. Authorities allege manipulation of energy data to justify procurement outside the government-to-government framework.

The scandal involves a disputed 68,000 metric tonnes of petrol valued at Ksh2.9 billion, intensifying public pressure for accountability.
