Kenya’s fastest sprinter, Ferdinand Omanyala, has defended his decision not to race American YouTuber IShowSpeed, saying the proposed contest did not align with his professional commitments or brand value.

Speaking to a group of young men and women on Tuesday, Omanyala explained that it would not have been practical to take part in an entertainment race and walk away with no tangible benefit. He stressed that his brand is the result of years of discipline, sacrifice, and significant investment, and cannot be compromised for social media exposure alone.

“I cannot build a brand for seven hours a day, for four months and 44 weeks a year, only for someone to pay me with streams and likes,” Omanyala said.

The Africa 100m record holder added that his schedule is already packed with professional engagements, training, and sponsor obligations, leaving little room for non-contractual appearances.

While acknowledging that a race against IShowSpeed would have been entertaining for fans, Omanyala raised concerns about the potential risks involved.

He noted that participating in such an event could expose him to injury, which would jeopardize not only his career but also his responsibilities to sponsors who support his journey.

The sprinter emphasized that every race he runs must make sense professionally and protect the brand he has worked tirelessly to build.
