A section of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) members, led by Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, has faulted party leader Oburu Odinga for taking too long to resolve the ongoing internal confrontations within the party.
The MPs, speaking on Monday afternoon, expressed concern over escalating tensions, particularly the recent wrangles between Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Minority Whip Junet Mohamed. They warned both leaders against making verbal slurs and urged Oburu to urgently convene an internal party session to address the disputes.
“It is for this reason that we request our party leader, Dr Oburu Odinga, to move with speed, convene the party’s organs, and help restore public confidence in the party,” the lawmakers said.
The MPs also called for an immediate investigation into an incident in which Kileleshwa MCA allegedly drew a gun against Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. Otiende further highlighted the attack on Lamu County Woman Representative Muthoni Marubu, who was physically assaulted at a public event for expressing her opinion.
“These incidents follow hot on the heels of the violence witnessed in recent by-elections, particularly in Kasipul Constituency, where two people were killed,” Amollo said. “Unless urgent action is taken to curb these unfortunate developments, the 2027 elections could be marred by widespread violence.”
Other MPs present at the press briefing included Suba North’s Millie Odhiambo, Nyatike’s Tom Ondege, Nominated MP Catherine Muma, Turkana South’s John Ariko, Ndhiwa’s Martin Owino, Nyaka’s Aduma Owuor, and Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang.
The call for urgent intervention comes amid growing internal wrangles within ODM over the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections. The feud between Sifuna and Junet Mohamed, which centers on alleged mismanagement of 2022 election funds, has intensified concerns about leadership and accountability.
With the passing of ODM’s former patriarch, the party now faces uncertainty over its Luo Nyanza leadership, with recent polls positioning Babu Owino as a leading contender to assume the mantle.
