Porro Ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Patrick Lerte has passed away, sending shockwaves of grief across Samburu County and the wider political fraternity.
Lerte’s death was confirmed through an internal memo issued by the Samburu County Assembly Clerk, Fred Lenapeer. According to the memo, the legislator died in the early hours of Sunday morning, December 28, while undergoing treatment at the Maralal Referral Hospital. The exact cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
At the time of his death, Lerte was serving his first term as MCA for Porro Ward, where he had earned a reputation as a vocal and dedicated leader. Colleagues described him as a passionate advocate for grassroots development, often championing issues affecting pastoralist communities, youth empowerment, and access to essential services.
News of his passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from fellow MCAs, county officials, and local leaders, many of whom praised his commitment to public service and his close connection with constituents. Several leaders noted that Lerte remained actively engaged in ward matters until shortly before his hospitalization.
The Samburu County Assembly observed that Lerte’s death is a major loss to the institution, given his growing influence and participation in assembly debates and committee work. Plans are underway to convene a special sitting to formally communicate his passing and to chart the way forward in line with the law.
Residents of Porro Ward have also expressed deep sorrow, describing the MCA as approachable, humble, and responsive to community needs. Local elders and opinion leaders called for calm and unity as the county mourns one of its own.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements and official county honors are expected to be communicated by the family and the county assembly in due course, as Samburu County comes to terms with the sudden loss of a serving legislator.
