President William Ruto has declared an all-out war on #alcohol and drug abuse, warning that the vice now poses a serious threat to Kenya’s health, security and economic future.
Speaking during a public engagement, the Head of State described substance abuse as a national emergency that requires urgent, coordinated action from all sectors of society.
According to government data, close to five million Kenyans aged between 15 and 65 are currently abusing alcohol or drugs, a trend President Ruto said is eroding the country’s productive workforce and destroying families.
He noted that the crisis has increasingly affected young people, undermining national development and fueling insecurity in both urban and rural areas.
President Ruto said his administration will intensify crackdowns on illicit brews, narcotics and unlicensed alcohol outlets, while strengthening enforcement by security agencies and regulatory bodies. He emphasized that those involved in the manufacture, distribution and sale of illegal drugs will face the full force of the law, regardless of their status or influence.
At the same time, the President called for a balanced approach that goes beyond enforcement. He underscored the need to invest in prevention, rehabilitation and mental health services to help those already affected by addiction. Ruto urged county governments, faith-based organizations and community leaders to play a central role in sensitization and recovery programs.
The President also challenged parents and guardians to take responsibility in guiding the youth, warning that the cost of inaction will be borne by future generations. He said the fight against alcohol and drug abuse is not just a government responsibility, but a collective national duty.
As Kenya grapples with rising cases of addiction, President Ruto maintained that decisive leadership and united action can reverse the trend and safeguard the nation’s social and economic wellbeing.
