The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has intensified its inquiry into the fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of former Lugari MP Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, summoning a wide circle of family members, friends and political associates to record statements as part of what it describes as a “wide-ranging and comprehensive” investigation.
In a statement issued as a follow-up to its January 5, 2026 briefing, the DCI confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the accident that occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at Karai along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway. Upon completion, the inquiry file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further action.
Statements Recorded From Close Associates and Prominent Figures
According to information released by the DCI, detectives have so far recorded statements from 28 individuals. While the agency maintains that cooperation has been voluntary, several of those questioned are close friends, family members or prominent public figures linked to the late Hon. Jirongo, underscoring the breadth of the probe.
Those who have recorded statements include:
Seven passengers from the ill-fated bus involved in the accident, who presented themselves to assist investigators.
Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, Speaker of the National Assembly, who recorded his statement in the early stages of the inquiry.
Hon. George Khaniri, former Hamisi MP and a close personal friend of the late Hon. Jirongo.
Ms. Eunice Chelagat, wife of Hon. George Khaniri, who also recorded a statement.
Investigators noted that Hon. Khaniri and his wife visited the accident scene on the day of the incident and played a role in facilitating the transfer of Hon. Jirongo’s remains from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home—details that form part of the inquiry timeline.
Autopsy Findings
The DCI further disclosed that a post-mortem examination established that Hon. Jirongo sustained severe injuries, including: Crush chest injuries, a broken sternum, lacerations to the heart, liver and kidneys.
The pathologist concluded that the cause of death was multiple crush injuries due to blunt force trauma, findings consistent with a high-impact road traffic accident.
Call for Restraint
As speculation and political commentary continue to swirl around the high-profile death, the DCI urged media houses, members of the public and political leaders to refrain from making unverified claims.
“The Directorate cautions against unsubstantiated statements that may prejudice ongoing investigations, cause unnecessary public anxiety, or unfairly injure the character of individuals who have cooperated with investigators,” the statement read.
The DCI reiterated its commitment to conducting impartial, thorough and expeditious investigations strictly in accordance with the law, as the nation awaits the findings that will ultimately be presented to the DPP.
