Vocal Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has launched an attack on the late ODM leader Raila Odinga’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, accusing her of misrepresenting the party as a family inheritance.
The remarks follow Winnie Odinga’s public statement at Kamukunji Grounds in Nairobi’s Kibra on January 18, 2026, where she(Winnie) said no ODM member would be expelled, specifically referring to Babu Owino and Senator Edwin Sifuna, who have been accused of dissent within the party.
“On this journey, we were passengers, and Baba was the driver. One day, we woke up and were shocked. The driver had died. Slowly, some people moved to the front, grabbed the steering wheel, and pulled it in different directions,” she said.
“They pushed us, passengers, to the back. They forgot Baba died only yesterday. Why the rush? Stop the bus. Let us talk. Let us decide together and move forward.”
She warned that forcing members out could drive supporters away, saying the party belongs to the people.
Alai, who has previously called for Sifuna’s ouster, countered Winnie’s stance on X, stating she cannot defend the two leaders while lacking a position in the Central Management Committee, and emphasized that ODM is not a family inheritance.
“ODM isn’t a family inheritance. Anyone imagining that it is is living in a fool’s paradise. All ODM members own the party in equal share,” he reacted.
His comments come after former Roots Party running mate Justina Wamae suggested that after Raila Odinga’s death, leadership of the party should pass to his children rather than his siblings – a view that contrasts with the current internal dynamics, where Raila’s elder brother Oburu Oginga holds a leadership role amid disputes.
The debate highlights the ongoing influence of the Odinga family in national politics and within ODM as Kenya approaches the 2027 general elections.
