Amid ongoing economic hardship, President William Ruto has sparked mixed reactions after being spotted wearing luxury #sunglasses during the Baringo Cultural Festival and the Kimalel Goat Auction in Baringo County.
While many Kenyans continue to struggle financially – particularly during the December holiday season, traditionally a time for celebration – the President’s fashion choice stood out both at the event and online. Images shared showed #Ruto opting for a smart-casual look, departing from his usual formal attire and accessorising with golden Classic C de Cartier Motif Sunglasses.
The eyewear, a signature product of French luxury brand Cartier, features rimless frames, an iconic “C” décor on the temples, photochromic lenses, and 18-karat gold plating. Designed with multiple anti-reflective coatings, the sunglasses blend heritage craftsmanship with modern luxury.
Online searches reveal the sunglasses retail at approximately Ksh 145,000 on the Cartier website, while MidWest Jewellery lists them at about Ksh 154,000, underlining their premium status.
Supporters viewed the accessory as a harmless personal style choice suitable for a sunny outdoor event, while critics questioned the optics of donning such luxury amid widespread economic strain.
Despite the debate, the Baringo Cultural Festival was widely regarded as successful, recording strong livestock sales and strengthened cultural ties – though for many, the President’s golden sunglasses remained the most talked-about detail.
